Golf Rule of the Week

Relief from a Cart Path - Rule 24-2

There always is a lot of confusion about how to take proper relief from a cart path. The cart path is considered an immovable obstruction and the player is entitled to relief without penalty from the cart path which is made of a foreign material such as tar, gravel, dirt. This does not include a dirt path made from vehicle traffic unless it had been defined as ground under repair.

The rule permits you to drop your ball within one club length of the "nearest point of relief" (not closer to the hole) that allows you to stand and swing freely without interference from the path. Usually, the nearest point of relief is on the side of the cart path where the ball is sitting closest to, but since you get to have relief with your stance, sometimes the nearest point of relief may be on the opposite side of the cart path. To be sure, take your normal stance on the side of the cart path which is closer to the ball and drop the ball within one club length of where the club you would most likely use sits while in your stance. Mark that spot. Do the same on the opposite side. You must use whichever marked spot is closer to the original spot where the ball was on the cart path. Of course, if you do not like where the ball may end up, (in the bushes, etc) you can always play it as it lies, on the cart path.

There is no provision in this rule, that allows you to go back along your balls flight path before the cart path and drop it there. The exception, is if the ball ends up in a marked lateral hazard (yellow stakes) on the side of the cart path. Then you are allowed to bring it back across the cart path.

MSGA / GHIN Seminar

The GHIN Seminar was fantastic. Nancy Storey the Director of Maine State Golf Association presented a fact filled seminar and answered many question for the membership. Lots of information presented and some very good questions answered. I was surprised that so many people are intimidated by such a simple and helpful system. She showed us how GHIN can help us improve our social atmosphere of the club and how it will even improve the skill level of all golfers. I thank those whom attended and everyone whom attended appreciates Nancy taking the time to come to our club.

Sincerely, Jim Semple

Handicap Chairperson

Member-Member

Tournament

Saturday Aug 28-9:30 am

Our Member-Member  "Get Acquainted" Tournaments are growing in popularity and if you have not tried it, come on out and give it a shot. Since the last format was so much fun, we decided to do the "6-6-6" format again this time. Six holes are "alternate shot", six holes are "best ball", and six holes are a "scramble".

This is a fun event for all players. The teams are drawn according to ability so that each team has an A, B, C & D player, and that you get a chance to meet and play golf with someone new. All members are welcome and invited to participate. You may also invite guests to participate as well.

The following is your Handicap and Tournament Committees. They are working hard to further encourage more use of the handicap/GHIN system, and further develop our tournament programs. If you have any question's or comments, please contact any member of these committee's.
