July 3rd & 4th "Flag Tournament"

On Saturday & Sunday July 3rd & 4th, we will be having an 18 hole "Flag Tournament"! This will be a fun event open to anyone with a USGA Handicap and is played individually. Each player gets a flag with their name on it to carry with them and once you reach the shot that totals your 9 hole handicap plus par 36, then you plant the flag at that spot. For example if you have a 9 hole handicap of 10, you add this to par 36, which is 46. Once you hit your 46th shot, you plant the flag at that spot where the ball ends up. The person with the flag planted at the farthest point on the golf course wins. Multiple places will be paid depending on the number of entries. The cost is $5 for prizes.

Sign up at the Pro Shop counter prior to going out, and have some fun!!!

INTRODUCING YOUR NGCC

HANDICAP COMMITTEE

Jim Semple, Chairman

Patti DeWolfe, Lori Edgerly, Ernie Whitman,

Keith Hodgdon, Dave Scarlett, Paul Whitman

Accurate handicaps are needed to make tournament and league competitions fair for all participants.  The primary purpose of the Handicap Committee is to help club members obtain and keep handicaps which are accurate according to USGA guidelines.

To achieve this objective, the Handicap Committee has many responsibilities, some of which are as follows:

·         Understand the USGA Handicap System and communicate it to the members

·         Encourage members to be entered into the GHIN computer system

·         Help members post acceptable scores to the GHIN system for handicap purposes

·         Make posted scores and handicaps accessible to all members for peer review

·         Seek out and answer any questions members may have regarding handicaps

All members of the Naples Golf and Country Club are entitled to be put into the GHIN computer system at no extra charge (it is part of the cost of your membership).  Please speak to our pro, Bob Caron, if you want to be put into the GHIN system.  Bob, or any of the Handicap Committee members, will show you how to post your scores (it’s really easy).  If any club member has a question about handicaps or posting scores, please feel free to ask Bob Caron or a member of the Handicap Committee.  We are here to serve the club members and facilitate fair competitions.

Don't Forget, Post Your Scores!

An accurate GHIN Handicap is key for fair play and it's a good measure of your progress in trying to improve your game.

Also, don't forget to "adjust" your scores according to Equitable Stroke Control (ESC). You need to adjust each hole's score down to the ESC according to your handicap level.

Equitable Stroke Control (ESC):

Course Handicap

9 or less  -     Max Double Bogey per hole

10-19     -     Max 7 strokes per hole

20-29     -     Max 8 strokes per hole

30-39     -     Max 9 strokes per hole

40-up     -     Max 10 strokes per hole

Golf Rule of the Week

Rule 28 Ball Unplayable

The player may deem his ball unplayable at any place on the course, except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable.

If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under penalty of one stroke:

a. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played; or

b. Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or

c. Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole.

If the unplayable ball is in a bunker, the player may proceed under Clause a, b, or c. If he elects to proceed under Clause b or c, a ball must be dropped in the bunker.

When proceeding under this Rule, the player may lift and clean his ball or substitute a ball.

He is working to make the restaurant as inviting and friendly a place as possible so all of our golfers and guests will use and enjoy it. Keith would like to expand even more into special events such as private parties, birthday's, etc.

Keith said that he is "Always so pleased to hear the great positive comments after our special events at the Sandtrap Grille."

Course Maintenance

Update

This week we are beginning treatment to eliminate the clover around all tees and greens. We also treated all the greens with fungicide, which we are doing every two weeks during the warmer weather as a preventative measure. We will be top dressing all the greens next week, which we are also doing every two weeks to keep improving our greens even more.

Member-Member

Golf Event

Sat July 31

Our next Member-Member golf get together will be Sat July 31. The tournament committee has put together a "fun" event that all members and their guests will enjoy. It will be a "6-6-6" format, where the first 6 holes will be "Alternate Shot", the second 6 holes will be "Best Ball", and the last 6 holes will be "Scramble".

Alternate shot is when each team of 4, alternates whose shot will be used. Person 1 will hit the first shot, person 2 will hit the second shot, etc. Best Ball is where each of the team plays their own ball tee to green, then only the best ball score is used for the team. Scramble is where each person hits a ball, then all hit their next shot from the best ball.

Members can invite guests, and all will be assigned to teams based on their handicap, ABC&D players per team. Hopefully you will meet and play with new members. The cost is $5 for prizes, $10 for guest green fee, and $12 for carts.

Look for the sign-up sheet on our new bulletin board!
