Thanks to Our Volunteers !!!

On Tuesday June 15, we had 14 dedicated volunteers working around the course helping with improvements and making it even more beautiful.

Carmen Caron, Linda Harps, Marie Caron, Dona Rolo, Ernie Whitman, and Maggie Poulin worked on the front nine finishing the flower and shrub planting as well as mulching.

All flower beds look great and the new one in back of the 5th green is a wonderful addition.

Don Jacobson, Paul Whitman, Dick Wedgewood, Ron Oberg, Russ Sweet, Ray Poulin, Jim Drews, and Allen Faraday worked between the 13th and 14th fairways cutting and clearing the small brush and branches.

This will help make it easier and quicker to find your ball, and to keep play moving along quicker.

 Handicap Committee

It is my pleasure to report the outcome of our Handicap Committee’s first full meeting. Attending  committee members Ernie Whitman, Lori Edgerly, Patti DeWolfe, Paul Whitman, Dave Scarlett, Keith Hodgdon and Jim Semple decided on meeting regularly on the second Monday of each month from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. It was also decided that our most important task was to help educate the membership of the importance of the GHIN system.

It has come to our attention that only forty percent of our membership has a handicap index calculated by the USGA. This surprises me as membership to the GHIN system is included in the Club Membership, (there is no additional charge) so that leads me to believe that there may be many reasons one does not want to take advantage of the system. We (The Handicap Committee) can only help if one of those reasons is Lack of Understanding!

It is our goal to introduce the GHIN system to all of the members, and to help clarify or define any concerns the members may have or develop. Our mission is to solve the mysteries concerning handicaps, seek and answer all questions, but most importantly debunk the age old negatives concerning handicappers.

I urge all to contact any of the above committee members or Our Pro Bob Caron with any questions, comments, concerns or ideas. If anonymity is desired please leave a note in a sealed envelope addressed to Handicap Chair.

A Tidbit of Info: Most know that the Scots invented golf but few know that they also invented Handicapping. The term originated in horse racing when a jockey was handed his odds in a cap hence (hand-in-cap).  In golf a system was devised to assign odds so that two players of differing abilities could compete fairly on an identical field of play. Early on it was called “assigning the odds”. Betting was an integral part of the game from early on. The precursor of the Handicap Chair was called the “Adjustor of Odds”. A reference to handicapping in golf was found in the archives of Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, Scotland dated March 30, 1782.Yet the first known reference was in the diary of Thomas Kincaid from Edinburgh dated Jan21, 1687.

Employee Focus

Robert Caron II

Robert Caron II has been a familiar face around the Naples Golf & Country Club since 1972 when he started playing golf here at the age of five. What started with Chet giving him a 5 iron to play with, continued with Bob winning most of the major course tournaments, then eventually to him becoming the Naples PGA Pro and General Manager.

Bob enrolled in the PGA Professional golf program in 1987, then worked 3 summers here in Naples, and 4 winters in Florida. He then moved to Michigan where he worked at Travis Point Country Club in Ann Arbor for 9 years. He had his first Head Pro position at Ann Arbor Golf & Outing for 7 years before returning to Maine to take the Head Pro position here at Naples in Jan of 2004.

Bob met Marie in Michigan and they married in 1997 and have two beautiful children, Robert III and Rebecca. Bob "Loves working at Naples" and especially enjoys the people. "The Members and guests make the job very easy and enjoyable." "The changes to the golf course over the years have been tremendous. I also love working for the new owners and the Board and hope to have a long relationship with them." Bob said that he would hope to be able to stay here as long as possible and to have his children grow up here in Naples as he did.

Course Maintenance

Update

All the work this Spring seems to be paying off as we get ready to enter our busy Summer season. The course conditions are very good with the greens and fairways in the best conditions they have been for many years.

The maintenance crew is still working on cleaning up many areas around the course from the tree removal this last fall. All greens will be top dressed this coming Monday. Fungicide was applied to all of the greens this past Monday to get ahead of any problems with the warm weather starting. The 6th silver tees will have some work done to it where the wood siding will be replaced with a banking of loam and seed. Sometime this week, all of the cart paths will be dragged and smoothed out. The trap rake is busy at work on all of the bunkers on Mon/Wed/Fri. The cutting of the greens have been lowered a little to a height of .145. You should find them a bit faster. As conditions permit, we will be lowering them again soon.

Rick also wants to give a big Thanks to all of the volunteers that helped work on the course yesterday!!
