 Handicap Committee

To The Members of Naples Golf & Country Club I welcome the opportunity to introduce the members of the Handicap Committee. Ernestine Whitman, Laurie Stacy, Pattie DeWolfe, Paul Whitman, Dave Scarlett, Keith Hodgedon and Chairperson Jim Semple.

As a licensed Golf Club of the USGA we are required to form and maintain a handicap committee. It is required that the committee must have at least three members one being the chairperson. The committee may include an employee of the club but he or she cannot chair the committee. The committee will assist the Club Professional and perform peer review as required by USGA.

We the committee feels that it is our primary concern to help educate and assist the members in obtaining an accurate handicap index; and solicit ideas and concerns from all members. The committee’s first meeting was held Friday June 4, 2010. Attending was Bob Caron, Patti DeWolfe, Dave Scarlett, Laurie Stacy, Paul Whitman, Ernestine Whitman, Keith Hodgedon, and Jim Semple. A chairperson was selected and committee’s purpose was discussed. It was decided that the next meeting will be held Monday June 14 at 5:00pm at Naples G&CC.

The Agenda will be as follows:

1.       Determine meeting frequency

2.       Education of Committee Members

3.       Duty and Responsibility of Committee

4.       Education of Club Members Concerning Consistent  Handicap Posting

I would like to thank all club members and personnel for their patience and understanding while we learn and decide all that is necessary to best perform the duties required.

Thank You

Jim Semple, Chairperson- Naples G&CC Handicap Committee

Tournament Committee

The Tournamant Committee met on Friday June 4th and began discussions on how we can support and bring new ideas to our Tournament program here at Naples Golf & Country Club. We have a good group that includes Wayne Newbegin (Chairman), Graham Payne, Don Jacobson, Russ Sweet, Maynard Bean, Donna Rollo, Susan Card, and Allen Faraday.

Our purpose is to help develop further our Member Tournament program by establishing written guidelines for them, to promote them to our membership to increase participation, and support Bob Caron in running them as needed. Overall, we aim to get more members involved and have more fun at these events.

Our first decision was to make the President's Cup both a Net and Gross tournament, instead of just gross. Hopefully we can get more of our membership involved in this annual event.

Second, we decided that we will have a Member "Get Acquainted" Scramble. This will be a Scramble open to all members and a guest in order to get to know each other better. Teams will be assigned in order to "mix it up", so you will play with someone you usually don't play with. We are planning on June 26 with a 12:15 shotgun start and a social get together with appetizers before starting at 11:30. A sign up sheet with information will be on the bulletin board shortly.

We also will be having the annual Naples and Governor's Cup on one day in July, instead of throughout the month of July. We are working to make this an event that will draw more members and a fun social time.

We also will be putting up a large bulletin board in the club house specifically for Members Information to better promote our members events and better communication. If you have any thoughts and/or suggestions, see any of us on the Committee.

Golf Rule of the Week

26-1 Relief For Ball In Water Hazard

If a ball is in a water hazard (red or yellow stakes) or you are virtually certain that a ball is in a water hazard, the player may under penalty of one stroke:

  1. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played; or
  2. Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped; or
  3. In a lateral hazard (yellow stakes), drop a ball outside the water hazard within two club-lengths not nearer the hole or a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard the same distance from the hole.

You may lift and clean your ball or substitute a ball if taking a drop. When hitting a ball from a water hazard, you may not test the condition of the hazard, touch the ground or water in the hazard with his hand or a club, or touch or move a loose impediment lying in or touching the hazard.

Future projects he is looking forward to working on are improving and rebuilding the bunkers, and some of the tee boxes.

Course Maintenance

Update

Progress on the greens are coming along extremely well. The 8th green is about 95% filled in and almost there. We are still pushing the greens with fertilization to completely fill in. Once we are satisfied that they are 100%, then we will begin cutting them lower, probably by the first week in July.

This week we will be spraying the greens for ants and other insects. We will be working on the area around the 5th tee box with additional loam and seeding. The 15th tee will reseeded as well as the grass strip along our entrance road.

All sprinklers on the back nine are fully functioning, but we have to tackle another water line break just across the road by the cart path to the 10th tee. We have only 4-5 sprinkler heads to work on for they front nine, then they will be fully functional.
